BETA-13 INTERVIEWS PROJECT MGR. JEFF THOMAS

Beta-13 ambushed espn nfl project manager Jeff Thomas outside VC headquarters and tried to get some answers. Jeff takes the usual company denial a bit too far; when asked about the blackouts, he says "I don't know anything about that," and "I've heard nothing about that." Give me a break! He honestly expects us to believe he's heard NOTHING about the blackouts? Sounds like an answer his lawyer told him to say. And while he did say at the beginning that he doesn't have a lot of time, he does seem like he's got a spare minute as long as the questions are harmless softballs from a fanboy -- notice how quickly he changes once he hears the word "CrashCam" though. If he really doesn't know anything about CrashCam, then why was just hearing the word enough to make him try to get away?

This guy's reaction speaks for itself -- he's clearly got something to hide. Call him at 415-479-3634 and tell him to stop lying!

Comments

I didn't think it was possible but Jeff Thomas is a worse actor than Greg Thomas. I love how he turned into rainman at the end "nah, nah, I dont want to talk about that.... nah, nah I dont want to talk about that" X 5000.

This is my favorite website of all time.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 12:57 PM

Oh, and for the record, you can't post video images of someone without their approval. If he wasnt your boss he could sue you right now.

This website is SOOOOO real though. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 and Forget about it, rick at August 27, 2003 01:00 PM

So let him sue me! I would think him suing me over posting his image like this would just make him look even more guilty, but if you're game Jeff, bring it on! Let's see what a court of law has to say about all this.

Posted by: beta-7 at August 27, 2003 01:08 PM

Ok, then why did you take down the phone conversations?

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 01:09 PM

For the record, 2 + 2 = 5, if they are in a public place you can post video of them.

Also, he knew he was being videotaped and he even acknowledged the camera so I think its perfectly legit to post it.

But I'm not a lawyer.

Posted by: Zak at August 27, 2003 01:18 PM

Ok, I believe it now. When you play first person mode in this videogame you may, at any random time, drop into a three point stance, yell out some numbers and colors, and then tackle the fuck out of someone. Then you will dance around for a little while and pass out. When you wake up you don't remember any of it.

Man, this makes SO MUCH FUCKING SENSE. I can't believe i ever doubted it.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 01:23 PM

I understand viral marketing, but why would VC/Sega go to these ridiculous extremes to try to sell ESPN Football? Is the sales competition between various football vid games really that brutal? If first-person "crash-cam" play is as intense as it seems, wouldn't traditional advertising and word-of-mouth buzz put ESPN Football on top pretty quickly?

I tend to be a skeptic, but no one who's responded to this site has posted anything credible to refute beta-7's evidence, of which there's tons.

My guess is that VC spent big millions in R&D on Crash Cam even before beta testing--reputations and careers could be destroyed if this thing crashed & burned before it was even released.

Posted by: unfrozen caveman lawyer at August 27, 2003 01:41 PM

No, you're totally right, when you play "crash can" you will randomly drop into a three point stance and you tackle the crap out of someone.

Perfectly logical if you ask me.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 01:45 PM

Is this website supposed to create some type of buzz over this new football game. If so, it is a pretty poor job of trying to fake people out. I also think it is unethical because a small number of people will actually believe this crap and feel legitamate concern and sadness for this made up medical condition that this guy supposedly has. I've got news for the people at SEGA, all publicity is NOT good publicity and it is always unethical and wrong to create a hoax like this that plays on peoples emotions. I for one will never purchase another product from SEGA. If you don't think this is a hoax, try hosting a website with streaming video for a few months and then ask yourself how in the world an unemployed person would pay for that amount of bandwidth. Want to visit a really good website, stop wasting your time here and go visit homestarrunner.com.

Posted by: This is stupid at August 27, 2003 02:02 PM

2+2=5: Here's a theory--of course, I can't *prove* anything.

How do you create the coolest, most intense football vid game ever? There's only so much you can do with 3D grafix on a flat screen. So you put the gamer in 1st person, right on the field. That's a start. But to take it to the next level, you'd want the gamer to actually *feel* the intensity of real football. How do you do that? Subliminals--visual and audio. (Google search on subliminal auto suggestion, mind control, MK-ULTRA, etc.)

Check out the beta test summaries & photos that "beta-x" supposedly posted to a separate site. These January 2003 beta testers experienced abnormal increases in blood pressure and pulse rate, plus all the other fucked up stuff like blackouts, seizures, rapid eye freak-outs. One guy even manifested extensive bruising, without any obvious cause.

Seems like VC got it almost right, but test subjects reacted in ways that were unplanned, unpredictable, and violent. Instead of just feeling the intensity, their subconscious was effected to the point that they unconsciously re-enacted aspects of game-play, even long after they stopped playing.

Whether this is a crazy marketing scheme or is for real, the whole thing is severely fucked-up.

Homestarrunner.com *rocks*.

Posted by: UCL at August 27, 2003 02:14 PM

Unfrozen Caveman... I really, really, really, really, really do hope that all of this is real. I think it would be unbelievable to walk around and see things like this happen randomly. It would be great! But, im not gonna get my hopes up. Im no expert in the field but from what i understand any of this "mind control" hocus pocus is far from being a reality at this point in time. Plus, the one thing that beta-7 posted was completely laughable (it said "killer" in yellow chickenscratch handwriting).

There is no way in hell that a company as large as sega would even take a risk like that. Do you understand, if this was true, how many multi-million dollar lawsuits there would be? Sega would be put out of business. Do you think that's an acceptable risk just to have Crash Cam "feel more real."

Plus the fact that alot of early reviews are panning the first person mode. I guess they wore mind control shields that stopped the evil sega from taking over their brains.

But, like I said, I would love to see random people just tackling the shit out of each other. I hope it happens to me... though, where i live, i don't think i would come out of it without atleast a few bullets in me.

BETA YOU STILL HAVE NEVER RESPONDED: YES OR NO, DO U WORK FOR EA?

Posted by: at August 27, 2003 02:39 PM

2+2=5: you may be right. I find this kind of shit fascinating, but like I said, I keep the skeptic's cap on.

beta-7:

1) How are you paying for this site? Streaming video, etc.? Like someone else said, it's pricey, especially for an unemployed dude.

2) How are your blog entries dated back to March when the site wasn't put up until June?

3) Beta-13 is a lousy interviewer. Hard to believe Greg Thomas would agree to be interviewed by some amateur who can't even articulate the project he's working on. Thomas must be pretty busy with the ESPN release only a week away.

Posted by: UCL at August 27, 2003 02:47 PM

To the 2 posters above, read the FAQ page.

Posted by: beta-7 at August 27, 2003 02:52 PM

Oh, I called the number and left a message for Jeff Thomas. I think you marketing guys will think it's pretty funny when you hear it.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 02:59 PM

if this site had a video where someone got crippled or fucked up so bad in a tackleing video it was hard to watch like some of that shit on rotten.com it would be so funny. Then this could be pay site.

faq doesnt talk about EA

Posted by: at August 27, 2003 05:03 PM

"faq doesnt talk about EA"

--Even though i have specifically said i don't work for ea, even if i hadn't, see on the faq where it says, "No, I don't work for Sega, or anyone for that matter" -- the word ANYONE would include ea, or ANYONE else. So if somebody comes up with some other crazy theory, like i'm an oompa-loompa who works for willy wonka, i'm not going to waste any more of my time saying, "No, I don't work for willy wonka" for idiots like you who have to have everything spelled out for them.

Posted by: beta-7 at August 27, 2003 05:15 PM

just write "i don't work for ea" if u dont and stop finding ur way around it, beta

Posted by: Tom (different person from other poster) at August 27, 2003 05:26 PM

I did! That's my point, i get sick of answering the same goddamn questions over and over for idiots who are too lazy to read.

Posted by: beta-7 at August 27, 2003 05:29 PM

I'm not so sure Jeff Thomas is a bad actor. He sure did a good job of acting pissed, had me fooled.

Posted by: Believer at August 27, 2003 05:41 PM

Keep up the great work, betas.

Posted by: Leo at August 27, 2003 05:48 PM

u didnt write it, u keep writing around it. just to prove ur point to all the non-believers (i'm a believer), just write "i dont work for EA" not "anyone" if u dont.

Posted by: Tom at August 27, 2003 06:38 PM

man this is either really hilarious
or extremely sad

either way I am entertained

oh and beta if you get the chance that guy asked a good question how do you pay for the site if you are unemployed???

but if the whole thing is true than good for you wanting to put out the truth at all costs

Posted by: cozmo at August 27, 2003 07:01 PM

Does anyone exercise commong fucking sense anymore? If Beta-7 was a smear campaign from EA sega would SUE THE LIVING SHIT out of them. Why in the world would EA risk that when their lead over all other football games last year was the biggest it has ever been? THAT MAKES NO SENSE! Use your goddamn brains.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 07:38 PM

Wow, this site is fucking hilarious. It is a good ad campaign, though, when you think about it. I'm sure some people will play this game just out of spite of Beta-7, or out of curiosity, or just because they want to smash stuff. And the people who actually buy all this will spread the word of this site even more, making even more people aware of their game, one that is so realistic that a human brain can be confused into thinking that it is actually real.

The most entertaining thing that Sega has created since Shenmue. Keep it up. I hope you don't discontinue this when the game comes out.

Posted by: Daemonkey at August 27, 2003 07:44 PM

I DO NOT WORK FOR EA. I DO NOT WORK FOR ANYONE. I AM UNEMPLOYED.

There, are you happy?

Posted by: beta-7 at August 27, 2003 08:09 PM

I followed this site when it first went up, watched everyone go loony over the Crib, but then when things stopped happening I forgot about it until I saw a post on a discussion board. I must say I'm glad to see the story picking up again and I can't wait to see how it's all going to fall out.

2 + 2 = 5, you need to chill, man. Don't you realize that noone believes any of this and that some people are just PLAYING ALONG BECAUSE IT IS FUN?!?! I would think that someone who plays VIDEOGAMES WOULD UNDERSTAND THAT!

So why not forget about calling people idiots and just have fun with it, I mean look at all this stuff they created to entertain us until the game comes out!! It's funny as hell! Just sit back and enjoy the ride. Heck, join in and play along, and maybe we can get some noobies to fall for it.

Posted by: Funny Boy at August 27, 2003 08:11 PM

Dude, that pic of Jeff Thomas is freaky looking. Now I understand why he wants people to get screwed up. HAHA.

Posted by: Doppy at August 27, 2003 08:22 PM

j/k ;) lol

Posted by: Doppy at August 27, 2003 08:23 PM

Yesterday I was jacking off then all of a sudden I blacked out.. when i woke up, some white goo was all over my body. It was scary.

Posted by: beta-20 at August 27, 2003 08:37 PM

beta-20, there's really no reason to act that way. You aren't impressing anyone and your dirty comments aren't even interesting or witty.

Isn't it past your bedtime?

Posted by: Zak at August 27, 2003 09:42 PM

Someone who makes posts like that is won't care if you insult him. He's doing it for our reaction to it. That's the mindset of the SPAMmer*; The pleasure of effecting someone or something electronically, usually in a negative way.

When you see someone like that on the Internet, just ignore them. If they don't get a response, they'll leave you alone.

(*Not to be confused with a Mail spammer, someone who sends junk e-mail. a SPAMmer is someone who jumps around from board to board making rude and idiotic comments for attention. Some of you probably know this, but I'm sure at least one person would have been confused.)

Posted by: Daemonkey at August 27, 2003 09:56 PM

Funny Boy, I agree with your post 100%. But, one thing you overlooked, is that I am also having a fucking blast acting the way I am.

Everyone is having fun :)

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 27, 2003 10:46 PM

Why didn't Jeff unlock the door? At least have him unlock the door to make it look more realistic.

Posted by: at August 28, 2003 12:39 AM

Somebody got a shovel? It's about neck deep of shit in here, bullshit that is.

Posted by: Blah at August 28, 2003 02:58 AM

This site is entertaining. Beta-7 sounds cool and like he's dealing with his delima as best he can.
And Greg is cute ina best friends hangout Dad kind a way. But is this site only visited by dorky boys?

Where are the other girls at? We game to. Although not normally football games.

Posted by: Becky D. at August 28, 2003 07:18 AM

would of been hilarious if you would of tackle him or run into to his car

Posted by: at August 28, 2003 01:51 PM

Yeah it would.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 28, 2003 05:19 PM

Which brings up an interesting point. If nearly all of you beta testers are blacking out and tackling shit than it must be TOTAL FUCKING CHAOS inside the VC building where most everyone has to have atleast put some time in playing the game.

Posted by: 2 + 2 = 5 at August 28, 2003 05:20 PM

Indeed 2+2=5, if this game is so unsafe, and yet people continue to work on it Beta-7, then what happens to these people? Blackouts? Seizures? Or does the "Evil" Company Sega dispose of their bodies by feeding them to Sonic and Kunckles?

Posted by: GyroMan at August 29, 2003 01:28 PM

I've seen better acting at an elementary school play.. If there is Soooo much evidence, and people are blacking out and pretending to be a QB/Linebacker, how is it that EVERY news source has ignored this story? The Weekly World News wouldn't even touch this story...

'Games made me INSANE... gotta save up money to buy more games... *thump* blackout, good think I was holding a pillow when I was playing...'

Posted by: at August 30, 2003 03:44 AM

The guy in the Jeff Thomas Video sounds Identical to the guy in the Oakland August 22. Blackout Video. (the guy giving the interview)

Check it out! no realy check it out..

Once again, I am not saying its not true, just the little observations I make...

It appears to me that whoever is behind this, is both paranoid, and an amateur. This website looks like it's ready to fall apart. I am successfully convinced that SEGA is not negligant.
